International Day of Yoga 2024
The practice of yoga has become many different things to people all over the world. With roots in India dating back roughly 5,000 years, (this early "yoga" was not what we think of yoga today, but more meditation and mindfulness practices) yoga has become a vital part to many in the ways of physical and mental wellness. In 2014, the United Nations declared June 21st to be International Day of Yoga in an effort to raise awareness of yoga and its benefits.
What are those benefits? A quick google search of "benefits of yoga" will show you that yoga can boost your mood, help you to build strength, improve your balance and coordination, reduce anxiety, and improve your immunity among many other benefits.
What Yoga Means to Me
In 2019, I decided to do my first yoga teacher training (YTT). The program ran from September through December. I didn't necessarily notice a whole lot of change to be honest. That is until in early February 2020, my husband told me that January had been the gloomiest January the Twin Cities had seen since the '60s. My immediate response was, "No it wasn.t, there's no way!" This is when I noticed the shift. As someone who has always felt more "down" in the gloominess of winter, I had somehow made it through without developing my own "gloom." In fact, I felt perfectly content.
While that feeling of contentment (or Santosha for my yoga friends) hasn't always stuck with me over the past 4+ years, it's easier to come back to time and time again. I'm not going to lie to you and promise yoga will fix all of your problems. It won't. It also isn't going to make it so you're happy every single day or will always remain unbothered by bumps in the road. Life will still happen, and you will continue to ride that crazy roller coaster. But yoga can make it easier to acclimate after each big drop sends you plummeting or each corkscrew sends you spiraling. Think of it more like the harness strapping you into the ride. It keeps you tethered; connected if you will. It allows you to enjoy the ride as you know in the back of your mind you have what you need right there to keep you safe.
This is why I started Kosha Connection. Through yoga, I've learned a lot about myself, I've been exposed to other modalities such as Ayurveda, Reiki and Sound Healing. I've gained a lot of knowledge and want to be able to share it with others so they can also experience at least a little more peace and harmony within. Whether it's through a one-on-one yoga session, a sound bath with your bridal party, or taking time to tune in on a retreat, I am excited to work with more people who are searching for peace and harmony.
